Love of Reading month

Our staff has decided to designate March as our Love of Reading month. We are suppose to come to our next inservice (Nov. 13) with an idea for a theme for this month. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks - this board always has awesome ideas!

Not sure if this would work, but last year, we did a "Faculty Favorites" board for the kids...9th grade...Where we posted a picture of the book, an excerpt/summary of it, and wrote a paragraph or two about why we liked it...Many of the kids found that we like the same stuff they do (gasp! ) and wanted to strike up conversations about the books, authors, favorite passages, etc. Just a thought.

Cuddle Up with a Great Book

What if you take the idea of the PP and expand it...call it "Cuddle up with a Good Book" and teachers post a book they would want to cuddle up with. Then each child picks one, even ask parents to send in what book they would use. Then culminate the month with a "Read In" where everyone wears their PJs, brings in pillows, and has reading time. Maybe older children can read to younger, maybe books on tape can be played. The school might even be able to offer hot chocolate or some healthy snack to have. A great way to show them the fun of reading.

Quiz Bowl

You could at the beginning of the month, allow students to read a certain book, such as Because of Winn Dixie. I just picked that book as an example. Have the teachers to read it as well. The teachers who read the book will make up questions for the quiz bowl. Have students who have read the book if they so desire to compete in the quiz bowl. The winner of the quiz bowl would recieve the movie version of the movie if there is a movie for the book. If no movie exist, possibly a gift card would be great to a local book store.
