Letter activities

Hi, we are know doing one letter a week and I need more letter activities. So far we introduce the letter with a book that we will read everyday. We then practice writing the letter in journals, we make a letter book out of construction paper, we also copy an aliteration sentence into our journals and draw a picture. Any more letter ideas?

Thanks!

Make the letter with playdoh (you can print patterns for this at childcareland.com I think)

Ask who has the letter in their name. My class has a daily graph so that would be one of our questions. I have letter tubs with objects that start with each letter. I have sound muncher that eats only things that start with the letter we are working on. Students love this! Every Friday we do letter show and tell (students bring something from home that starts with the letter of the week). Poems are great! We learn a poem every week and on Friday add it to their poetry journal and circle that letter. I use my projector to play clips from sesame street online. It has a lot of short clips on letters. Other ideas:

Find the letter in magazines and cut and glue them. Make it a contest, which table can find the most___.

Use highlighters on poems or magazines and highlight the letter.

Playdough letters

Shaving cream

Brainstorm web

Thumbs up/thumbs down (does ___ start with ___)

Scavenger hunt

I use letter bags. I purchased small, canvas tote bags from Oriental Trading and send one home with each child at the beginning of the week. The children are instructed to find one small object that begins with the focus letter. They bring the bags back and offer clues as to the contents. The other children try to guess what the bag holds, and this gives me a great opportunity to reteach the letter sound. We use the objects later in the week for sorting and counting. We also use them from time to time as ideas for stories during writing. The kids love it!

try no time for flash cards (google it) it is website that has a project for letters. It does take some prep work, but my K's seem to remember the letter associated with the project. Do you have Alphafriends? I started this three weeks ago, (it is part of our districts reading program) and kids love the cute songs that go with each letter. The website K-Crew's school unit page has grerat ABC ideas.
