Kindergarten Native Americans and 1st Grade Pilgrims

My school is working on having a feast or pow wow for Thanksgiving. We have been thinking about the K and 2nd grade students being Native Americans and the 1st graders being Pilgrims. We usually do little stations for the children to learn more about each one. We are trying to think of some stations where they would gain knowledge of each group. We are also trying to think of a way to involve making food in at least one of the pilgrim and native american stations. Please help the meeting is Monday. Tell me how all of you do Thanksgiving feasts and pow wows!

Here's a few ideas:

*You can make tortilla t-pees with your students.

* Make Native American vests with native american symbols on it. If you go to a grocery store they will give you paper bags.

*You can have students shuck corn. You could even make it into a timed race like who can shuck corn the quickest?!?

We played lacrosse, since the Native Americans played that, Pilgrim children played marbles (sort of), made clam chowder, which the Native Americans learned to make from the French traders, wampum (macaroni) necklaces dyed with purple, black food coloring and left some plain. We wrote on small chalkboards. I'll post more if I can remember...

When we had ours years ago (we haven't done it in a long time) we:

*Read a thanksgiving mini story together (out loud)
*Sang a Native American song (with movements)
*Ate our food - each parent was responsible for bringing an ingredient for our stew and muffins.
*We made the stew and muffins in our classes
*We also made these really cute corn cobs that we placed around cups that we put popcorn in to put at each place setting
*The kids made the place mats
*We also had the kids make invitations and posters announcing the event

We did keep it pretty simple - the actual feast only lasted about 30 minutes.

That's all I can remember right now.

And some of our kids were dressed like piligrms (we took large white paper and made bonnets and a collar for the girls and using sentence strips we made hats and collars for the boys. We took brown shopping bags and cut them into vests and had the kids paint them with N.A. symbols and also used sentence strips to make feathered headbands.
