I am trying to print off some story questions from a program our school uses called Study Island. However, I'm trying to find questions for predicting and I'm not sure where to look. How similar/different is predicting & inferencing?

Predicting is done by looking forward and inferring.
"What do you predict will happen to the girls after they enter the tunnel?"

When we infer, we look back or look at what we are currently thinking.

Can you infer where I am and what I am doing?
I hear screaming. My stomach feels funny.
Can you see my hair blowing? I’m feeling excited!

Predicting and Inferring

Inferring is trying to understand what the author does not specifically say in the text. It is reading between the lines. It involves taking the facts from the text and combining them with what you know to come up with an inference.
Predicting is thinking of what will happen next in a story.

I tell my students that when you predict you will often find out the answer to it but when we infer we don't always get the answer but instead have to use what we know about the situation and about how that really is in real life to make a guess about something. I like the pp words about reading between the lines. That is well put!

Predicting is one of many "types" of inferential thinking.
