Ancient Greece

This year the school is using Core Knowledge to replace the social studies book. I'm teaching the students about Ancient Greece and I have no idea what to do, and the lesson plans from Core Know seem boring. I want to make it fun, but I'm not the creative. Any help please!

I really like the History Pockets from Evan Moor - they have one on Ancient Greece that I think would be fabulous for 2nd graders.

Hour of the Olympics

by Mary Pope Osborne is a great book for Ancient Greece. Jean Marzollo has written several books based on Greek Myths (e.g. Pandora's Box) for second graders. Also, the Greek gods and goddesses are interesting to kids. Don't forget to have Olympics. Our P.E. teacher helps organize the events.
You'll love the unit!

I bought a book through a scholastic book club awhile back that is called "The Best Book of Ancient Greece." by Belinda Weber. Not sure where you could find it, maybe the scholstic website or on ebay or something. I've never done a unit so I can't help with ideas for lessons, but that book would be a great resource for information.

We do Core Knowledge at my school and LOVE it! When you say the lesson plans are boring, I assume you're talking about the Pearson readers??? They can be a little dry, but be as creative as possible! You definitely need to go to the Core Knowledge website (http://coreknowledge.org/CK/resrcs/lessons/2.htm) and take a good look at the lesson plans on there. Have fun with it! My kids learned about a couple of gods/goddesses each day and thought it was hilarious that the gods had so much drama going on! We also had a fun Olympics we did at the end of our unit.

Explore that website for some great ideas! Oh, I almost forgot...Colorado has a great website for Core Knowledge websites too. Try it at: http://www.ckcolorado.org/lessons/2ndgrade.asp. Good luck!
