Native American Weaving

My 5th graders and I just finished up our Native American unit with a weaving project. We made cardboard looms, then wove mini Native American "blankets." The kids LOVED it! I played Native American music and the kids were really focused the entire time! We talked about what Native Americans would have used for yarn, how they would have dyed it, what their looms would have been made of, etc. The kids' weaving turned out really well and they were so excited to show their families what they had done in school that day!

These look great! I think I may try it with my kids too!
Was it difficult to tie the ends so that it didn't fall apart?

Nope, not at all! When the kids took their weaving off the loom, the ends were very long. They just tied 2 strings together at at time into knots so the ends wouldn't come out, then they trimmed up the ends to make it look like fringe.

I love it. Are you going to sew them together for a classroom "quilt"?

Actually, yes! One of my students suggested doing that. I'm not sure if we'll somehow weave them all together or if I'll just hot glue them together The kids already took their first weavings home, so we'll just have to make more...darn!

I might try this with my 8th graders. Our schools monthly theme is Native American Herritage, and I think this would be a nice culminating activity to end the month with.
Your students did a great job.

These instructions are really good and very detailed! My kids were so excited about this project that they went home and made big looms out of posterboard and they're making blankets & scarves as Christmas gifts! Hopefully your kids enjoy this project as much as mine did!
