High Level Readers!! Please help!?!?!

Hello all,

This is my first year teaching second grade and I'm having trouble running my high level guided reading groups. I have them reading chapter books with me, but I wondering if this is the right way to go since sometimes I only get to see them once or twice a week, and it seems to take forever to finish.

Also, what kinds of activities do you do for higher level readers for post reading? I'm really comfortable with the on level students, but I feel like when it comes to the higher level readers my reading groups aren't as strong.

Activities, ways you run your high level reading groups??Any advice would be appreciated!!!!

Do you have a subscription to Reading A-Z to download the leveled books? I would have them read with you once or twice a week from books at their reading level to test for comprehension, etc. The other days I would let them read chapter books silently on their own. If they are very high readers and comprehending, it is okay to only meet with them a couple of times a week.

Have you tried using some of the trifolds from Ms. Winston's site? She has some great comprehension/prediction/inferring trifolds on chapter books - and a blank so you can make one for any book. http://www.mswinston.com/trifolds.html

I have some high firsts that I am having read a chapter. We meet and talk about the plot and details in the chapter, then they are writing a summary of each chapter as we go. I am sure your 2nds could use this, too. I am using a lapbook kind of format for it.
