I have a parent who wants to know how to improve reading comprehension for her son. I explained to her about finding books at an appropriate level. I also sent home all of the reading strategies that we work on. Can anyone think of anything else I should suggest? THANKS!!!

Have her have her son retell the story. Another idea would be to have him complete the story format - main event in the beginning, middle and end. He could also state the main characters, setting, problem and solution. She could also ask him some inference questions - who, what, where, why - make predictions of what will happen next.

I always tell the parent to read aloud to their child, as it seems by this age most parents stop this valuable comprehension activity. This way parent and child can discover new books to explore, work on comprehension, and spend quality time together.
