How do you teach Mean, Median ,and Mode? I am in my first year of EDM and frankly, skipped the parts of this at the beginning just being overwhelmed with the pacing as it was. Now I know I must embed this and it is a required third grade concept in this program. Does anyone have any suggestions outside of this program that help the kids learn the terms and concepts? Thanks to one and all!

Do you do Calendar Math? I have a section on mine for the 3Ms. (as well as range and outlier) I find that doing it daily in this way makes it super simple for me to cover it, as well as have it sink in for the kids. I never really do a formal lesson on it, because I am doing it through calendar.

When I taught 4th grade I had my kids memorize and present this rap to each other. They loved it and learned in the long run! I cited the web site at the bottom:

The MMMR Rap

The M, The M, The MMMR Rap.
The M, The M, The MMMR Rap.
Now Mode, Mode, Iíve been told,
is the # that you see the most.
Median, Median, Median, is the man.
The man in the middle, the man in the middle.
Just line up the #s the best you can
From smallest to largest,
From smallest to largest.
Now Mean, Mean, he is the best.
Of course he is better than all the rest.
Just add, add, add all your #s,
and when you divide,
you wonít believe your eyes-
youíll only have one # to your surprise.
Last but not least is our friend the Range-
He isnít the best, but he sure is strange.
You start with the Hiiiggghhh and subtract
the Loooowwww!!!
Youíve got the Range and there is no moí!
The M, the M, The MMMR Rap.
The M, the M, The MMMR Rap.
When you sing it out loud Ė itís all just a snap!

Laura Candler's site has a couple of free games for this called Dynamic Data that are ready to print out and use. I put the pages in protective sleeves and let the students initial the boxes using dry erase markers. They really like these games, and they don't take a lot of time to prep or play. Here's a link.

I use M and M's-they learn anything with candy. I buy the individual packets of M and M's and they have to make a tally chart and then find the mean, median, mode, range, minimum, and maximum. Finally, they have to do a bar graph. It's great and they get to eat the candy!

Here's my worksheet. You can ignore the equivalent fractions-I had my 5th graders attempt it.

GG!

What's the tune for the rap? I love it, but am having trouble singing it.
