I haven't been a member long enough to be able to attach a document, so I will have to just copy and paste. Here are some ideas I pulled together for a project in school:
-Define courage. Create a bulletin board containing the student-created definition and examples the students bring in (articles, book covers, personal stories, etc.) that exemplify the trait. After completing the reading, redefine courage. How is this different from our original definition?
- Fairy tales are very important to Annemarie and her sister Kirsti. What were some of your favorite fairy tales as a child? What lessons did they teach?
- Review the geography of Europe. Notice the place where Denmark is across the sea from Sweden. Decide on a potential location for Uncle Henrik’s house.
- Students will present on personal family traditions and how they are celebrated.
- Label and color a map of Europe using the colors that Annemarie remembers from the map she uses. For those countries that do not have colors already associated with them, students may select their own.
- Create an “underground” newspaper detailing the events in Denmark as the Nazis invaded (discussed in chapter 2).
- Divide into “families” and plan meals for a week using the given rations.
- Construct a plan for a community to help Jews who have lost their businesses and have no way to provide for their families. How can individuals help?
- Design a poster detailing some of the information we learned about the Jewish religion in this chapter. Particularly discuss Sabbath and the Jewish New Year.
- On a map of Denmark, using the information given in chapter 6, trace the travel path of the Johansens and Ellen on a map.
- As a journalist, interview Peter asking about his role in the Resistance.
- Students reenact Block 6. We will stage a funeral and each student has a different role (Jews or Resistance members). I will have another teacher come and bang on the door as a soldier and question the participants. The students will then reenact the escape to the ship, continuing with their given roles. Students are to remain as that character no matter what happens and deal with whatever situations may come.
- Students will predict what is in the package. They will create a replica of what they believe is in the package.
- Write a journal entry as Annemarie after her experiences. How do you feel? Do you think you were courageous?
- Illustrate your favorite scene or scenes from the story.
- Write a letter to Annemarie as Ellen describing what life is like in Sweden and what happened after she left Uncle Henrik’s house.
- Make a travel brochure for Denmark. In particular, advertise Copenhagen.
Hope this helps!
