I'll be watching this thread too - my teaching partner and I are doing this book with our WWII unit next semester. Thanks for starting it!

and I ordered the Disney movie Miracle at Midnight. It chronicles almost EXACTLY the story of Number the Stars. It was a great culminating activity for my students!

I just started the novel yesterday. We did a big lesson on symbols, filling the board with all kinds of symbols and their meanings, and discussing them. I included some religious symbols and then added the swastika. However, I have to admit I did quite a show about why I wouldn't leave it up on the board because of the power that symbol and others have, even today. The class was totally engaged! They also colored a map of Europe during 1941/42 showing where they stood--German occupation, neutral, and Allies. This all helps them understand the setting before we begin reading.

My fourth grade class really enjoys reading this reader's theater style with lots of emotion.
I'll try to send along more materials. My materials have been gathered from a variety of sources and many are not on my computer.

My husband teaches this book every year and has had some great discussion on the question, "is it ever okay to lie?" He said his 6th graders had some interesting insights.
