Guided Reading

Hey Everyone,

I am new teacher and I am really struggling with guided reading. I started testing my students to see if they moved up to the level they are supposed to be at for report cards and some of them are not moving. The thing that is getting them is the comprehension. So I have been trying to do some activities with the students and explain to them how it is important to remember what happens in the story. Does anyone have any tips on asking comprehension or any activities?
Thank you!

One way is to model comprehension skills during shared reading. Then you can refer to it when doing guided reading. "Remember when we were reading together and we stopped to think about what might happen? Well, I'd like to you try that now in your own book."

Break down what you expect in mini lessons
1. good readers identify the characters ( 1-2 days)
2. good readers identify setting as a time and a place (2-3 days)
3. good readers identify story problem or kick off ( 2-3 days)
4. good readers identify important events that help resolve the story problem ( week)
5. good readers identify story resolution and how the character's feelings or behavior changed and tell why (week)
6. good readers check for understanding before during and after reading ( daily)
7. good readers retell a story using pictures
8. good readers retell a story with out pictures
Here is a retelling Graphic Organizer I made and use daily. I laminate and they use dry erase markers after they read their stories or they talk it out.
9. good readers share good stories with others (daily read and retell to a friend)

You might want to try Debbie Miller's Reading with Meaning. It's aimed at first grade comprehension.

I stole also stole an activity from Richard Allington. We draw a chart with four squares labeled with words and pictures: character, setting, problem, solution. It makes a good guide for student summaries. And can be used to help write stories, to boot.
