Any creative ways for teaching, identifying groups of 10 to solve addition problems? (i.e. 6+4+3=10+3) etc.

Number Sense

We work on number sense for weeks (what seems like forever) in our 1st grades. Five frame and then ten frame activities help the children visualize what 10 looks like. My class reward chart for class compliments is on 10 frames. I add a round colored sticker. They tell me how many we have and how many more we need until we have ten.(reward time) They also can tell that we have 2 filled frames and 6 more, so we have 26 compliments so far this year... and reward time has been pulling out all of the math manipulatives for a free choice time. The children love it!

Groups of Ten

I would like to know also! My school is beginning Montessori so we have a lot of beads. One thing we do is have a strip of 10 beads...and the students have to show all the combinations that make ten. So for example...put a few groups of ten beads on the left going down the table, next to each group to the right, the student will put different combinations of beads (or whatever manipulative you use) that total 10. You could use this technique with different numbers. Or maybe make slips of paper that have pictures of different amounts so they can see the pattern better. Hope this makes some sense!
