take home bags

I really want to do these... but am a little nervous about how to get them started. Does anyone have samples of printables they put in their bags... or any ideas of how I should get started without going crazy? What themes are the easiest? Are there any websites out there for support?

Thank you soooo much!!

I took the plunge and started them this year. It was a bit hard to get started but once you do, you get on a roll. I googled take home/literacy bags and got a lot of hits. Also, I found many an idea on here. Christina Bainbridge's site had things as did Shari Sloane's site. I got the bags from Hobby Lobby when they were 50% off and I am using books I have in my stockpile. You can also get some from Scholastic pretty cheap. If you need items, ask fellow teachers if they have it at home already. I got many items from rummage sales too. The kids love them and look forward to checking them out each week.

I use them too. Each bag has a different title such as Dogs or Teeth or whatever set of books I can find to group. I try to put in different level books for all reading levels.I have more bags than students in the class. I have them read one book and do one paper. I offer them the choice of a standard book report form or a fun sheet that ties into the book topic in the folder. I got bags that were inexpensive at Walmart- canvas ones. My goal is to get them to read...not do another worksheet. The kids enjoy them and I like the change of pace. It took a bit to coordinate, but once it's done, all you really need to do is copy papers.
