Does anyone have good activities for things that are found on the Earth's surface and/or natural resources and how they are useful?

We made a dirt dessert, illustrating the layers of the earth in a clear plastic cup(complete with worms and raisinette ants), then they used a straw to take a "core sample" and completed an observation log.

Are you doing rocks/minerals/rock cycle or focusing more on ways to use them?

More ways to use them. We don't have much say its county directed. They give us a topic with little resources and tell us to teach it, blah!

I'll look at school today, but I think my unit was more the rock cycle type of thing. You have to love guidelines-we get one to two words and are supposed to figure out what exactly they're talking about ex: maps, family in the community-then they give us this crazy exam at the end of the year that the kids have to take that is never the same. The joys of teaching!
