I've been teaching and talking about onomatopoeia in my classroom.

How do you assess onomatopoeia in your classroom????

TIA!

Our standard/indicator reads...
"TSW find examples of sound devices (including onomatopoeia and alliteration).

I have something now, but I'm not exactly sure if it's sufficient. The document from the standards support document SDE says that we should find examples in their writing also... SO... I have to give grades (I know, I dont' agree with thtat either) but I ahve to do it.

what i did when i taught onomatopoei was first i introduced it with a song and in that song. after we sang the song we made a class list of onomotopoeia and i made sure every student gave me one. Thats how i checked who got it or not. If they werent able to give me one then i knew they needed more help. For extention activity i gave them a piece of paper and they folded it in half and divided it into three sections which gave them 6 squares. On the top three they wrote an onomatopoeia word on each and then a sentence for it on the bottom squares. Hope this helps!

Comic Strips

Last year I had the kids write skits and act them out. Then we took pictures of them acting them out and put them into a comic strip where they had to write in the words and sounds into the word bubbles. Does that make sense? It was a lot of fun and the kids seemed to really get it.
