Quick as a Cricket by Audrey Wood to get started. It is a book of similes with awesome illustrations.

My literacy coach shared a new book with us this year. It is called My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks. The kids loved it!

As easy as pie...

I read both of the previously mentioned books, and then we create a class book called "Similes Are as Easy as Pie." Each student picks a different phrase from a basket, such as "____as bright as___" or "___as silly as___" and then creates his/her own simile. We write them on papers that have a giant pie shape on them. They enjoy sharing the finished book with their families.

I just read the book Crazy Like a Fox by Loreen Leedy. It's great because the simile is completed on the second page, giving the opportunity for students to brainstorm a list of potential comparisons. My kids really liked it and are now using similes on their own.

Tall tale books are full of similies. Steven Kellogg rewrote a lot of tall tale books.
