Money and Thanksgiving

Hello.. I was just wondering if you all had any good ideas for me.. I'm currently teaching money to my second graders. I was wondering if you had any good Thanksgiving money activities. I was thinking about having students use their play money to buy Thanksgiving foods (like a store), but I'm not exactly sure what foods to include.

Thanks for any ideas!

You could have them buy the pieces they need to make a picture or edible Thanksgiving item (like the edible turkeys posted before on PT). I would focus on nickel, dime and quarter. Also you could use paper money so they learn the pictures, and have them glue on the money to create a paper plate thanksgiving meal. (ex. one piece of pie=15 cents)

You could get grocery store sale ads for TG and have the kids work to find the cost of a TG dinner?

Or "black Friday" ads and have them make a list of things they want, including prices, and add.

I use simple recipes for things you would find at Thanksgiving dinner (green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, fruit salad, sweet potatoe casserole, etc.) I put each recipe on a card and then the students, in groups, have to go through ads from one of our local grocery stores and find the ingredients. Then they add up the cost of each recipe. Just make sure the recipes are simple (1 can green beans, 1 can cream of mushroom soup, 1 can French Fried Onions for the green bean casserole, etc.) AND make sure the items can all be found in the ads. It takes a bit of preparation but it is fun!
