U.S Symbols unit

Hello All,
We have a big open house at our school coming up in January. I am looking for a theme to do with my students. I have done the rain forest, China, Artic Animals. This year I am thinking about doing a unit on U.S. Symbols. Do you have any great activities to go along with this unit? I will make a giant American Flag for the B.B. For a research paper, I will have them research about some of the animals that we have here in the U.S. I need a project that they can do at home to put on their desks. I was thinking about having them create one of the U.S. landmarks, but I don't know how easy that would be for them. I also need about 8 or 9 projects that we can hang around the classroom. Our rooms have to be dripping with projects. What are your thoughts and ideas on this unit? Thanks

What about having them create American Flags with construction paper?

They could make a liberty bell out of cardboard and foil.

How about making a model of Washington DC out of milk cartons, cracker boxes, etc.

TLC art lessons has a book called America filled with great art projects that are cut from shapes and is a great direction following book. Scholastic had a set of books that were easy readers that talk about different symbols of the United States.

If you have the computer program, Kidspiration, there are pictures of the US symbols. You can have them do a kidspiration project. This would showcase their technology skills.

If you have kidpix, you could give each student a US symbol and they could create a page for a slideshow using the tools of kidpix.

If you go to www.kinderlit.com, they have a very cute America's symbols book. It is very cute and first graders love it. The book is $8.75 and you can reproduce it all you want. You could use the different pages in the book to hang around your room. Hope this helps.
