Hat help!

My class is singing "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" at our Christmas concert. I was thinking that it would be cute if they wear a hippo hat. I've looked online, but I'd be spending over $100 if I go that route and the money will be coming out of my pocket.
So I'm wondering if there's an inexpensive way to make them. Does anyone have any ideas?
Or, maybe I should not do the hats... What do you think? Please help!

Can they make them out of construction paper?

You could use the construction paper to make a band around the head first. Then maybe use some simple shapes to make the face and attach it to the band....I made a pic to show what I mean (not the best rendering!!!)

for the help. I think that's the most cost effective way.

You could try doing something like this but with hippo faces. I don't like hiding kids faces behind masks.

I meant a hat type thing, with the face from the band up. Masks bother me...
