My principal emailed everyone at my grade level today to inform us that there would be a parent visiting our classrooms in the afternoon. (we were given about 3 hours' notice.....*IF* we checked our email when she sent it!)

The email went on to say this:

"Please make sure that you are TEACHING when the parent arrives. She wants to see what the program is like. We do not need her seeing snack time, story time or play time. Adjust your schedules accordingly. Welcome the parent into your classroom, but DO NOT STOP TEACHING during her visit."

WTF?!?!??!?

So I'm not supposed to feed my kids all afternoon, in case this woman shows up at that time?

I clicked on the email and selected "Mark as Unread" so that my principal would think that I hadn't read it yet. I conducted my afternoon as I normally would. The parent visited my room during snack and story time. OH WELL!

Good for you! I would have done the exact same. Was this a parent of one of your students? Or somebody interested in the school?

Who was visiting...the queen of England?? Why was this parent so important that everyone's schedule was supposed to be changed?

Isn't snack and story time a normal part of teaching in a normal day?

geez.

Isn't story time "teaching"? I am confused.

Often, in my experience, a parent . . .

. . . who comes under these circumstances is looking over the school to choose a teacher for their child. They are often moving into the area and select this way to "pre-enroll" their child in a class.

Since when is story time not academic/teaching time?!?! That email is mind blowing. What goes on in the classroom, goes on because it is part of the students' day! Good for you. I totally respect what you did.
