Grinch Stole Christmas Readers' Theatre

Every year before Christmas/Winter Break my 5th grade class prepares the "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" Readers' Theatre and presents it to various lower elementary classes. (By the way, many thanks to dolmansaxlil here on PT for sharing!!!)

This year I have a boy who is Jehovah's Witness. I don't want to cancel the readers' theater because of one individual, but am not sure what meaningful activities he could be involved in while we are practicing. I also don't want him to be singled out, but know of no way to prevent it.

I don't think he could be the "stage manager" or script prompter.

The only thing I've come up with so far is possibly having him memorize a winter poem to perform before we start the Grinch.

Please, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much in advance.

That sounds like a fun activity and I totally understand why you want to do it. This probably isn't what you want to hear but I don't think it is appropriate to plan this unless every child in your class celebrates Christmas. If it were a one hour project that this student couldn't be a part of, fine, but it seems like he would be off doing something on his own for a significant portion of time over several days. This doesn't seem fair and I do think he will be singled out.

I would involve the class in performing a different reader's theatre script (or perhaps start a new tradition where they could be involved in writing their own). In my district at least this wouldn't be allowed because it doesn't say "christmas" anywhere in the curriculum. It is a changing world.
