reading response

My kids are having trouble writing about their self-selected reading book. Many were not picking just right books earlier in the year and now they are, which is one step forward. I am looking for ideas on how to model a reading response, possible formats, rubrics etc. I know I need to model more, I just can't decide what exactly I want from my students and I feel stuck! I've given them startes, questions to answer, and a letter format to fill in but I am not getting anything meaningful out of them. Help

Short Book Review

I start by teaching mine to write a review of the book. I read them a picture book and then we write the review together. We include

the title of the book

the author's name

the genre

a one to two sentence summary of the book

make a connection or share a question that comes to you while reading the story

your opinion of the story and a sentence or two why you have that opinion

My third graders needed a great deal of practice with this before they could write a good book review.

I'm assuming that the poster found the story frame on Ms. Sanchez's website (based on the bottom of the page). Here's the site:

Click on the downloads cafe. She has lots and lots of wonderful resources on her site.

I plan to adapt this to my lower 6th graders, having them use all of the statements to help them develop a paragraph. Thanks to you (and Ms. Sanchez)

2-3 Paragraph Summary about what you read about in your book or novel.
Paragraphs should be at least 8-10 sentences.

Independent Reading Journal # 3

Was the title of the book appropriate? Does the title “grab” you and make you want to read the book? Explain your response completely. Your response should be at least a paragraph.

I posted this idea a while back and then NeeCee created a worksheet for the idea. This may not be appropriate for the level you teach and also may not get anything meaningful out of the students, especially since it sounds like you have already tried similar things. But take a look:
