Ornament ideas?
Old 11-21-2009, 05:58 PM

I typically buy inexpensive ornaments that my students color and then insert a picture as a little something for their parents. (all of my students celebrate Christmas--I checked) Anyone have any cute ideas for a simple, 4th grade appropriate ornament to make that might include a picture of the student? I just know that I still hang my own children's ornaments on our tree and they are adults!

Try to find a bunch of old computer cd's...the kind that used to come free in the mail from aol are good, but any will work...Anyway, cover the non-shiney side with red felt (trace the circle, and cut it out) Before attaching tie a string throught the center hole so the ornament can hang. Then, glue on the felt..you kinda have to 'paint' the glue on. then, the kids use old puzzle pieces to create a wreath look on the red side. In the past I have spray painted the pieces green beforehand, but imo it looks better when they just use old puzzle pieces and it is multi colored. Then, in the middle glue their pic and use puffy paint to write the year.

In 4th grade they can probaably do everything themselves. The only thing I do for my first graaders is cut the felt. (mostly b/c i am anal like that)

Good luck, hope you find an idea that will work for you!

foam ornaments

My Wal-Mart's craft section has foam ornaments (like the kind you can get from Oriental Trading) that students assemble. They're 24 in a pack for $5.00. There are some that students can put their picture in, and others that don't require a picture.

I get the clear Christmas balls and I take the hook thing off and the kids can choose either red or green and silver or gold...they swirl them around and then turn them upside down in a styrofoam cup until dry...put hook thing back on and tie a ribbon on it...

For a few years, I did a similar ornament with the kids. We took clear glass balls and swirled painted inside them. I personally loved the maroon and gold ones!

I was hoping to find something new, easy, and unusual. Not feeling very creative at the moment. I was toying with the idea of cutting out paper plates into small but interesting shapes, covering them with attractive craft paper, and them helping the kids
turn them into frames. Not sure how great that will look. I spent the afternoon Xmas shopping for paper favors for my husband's company party.......I'm drained!

Thanks everyone for sharing!

I've made handmade ornaments for my kids since I began teaching at this school in 1980. This year, I bought the first letter of their first name and some Christmas paper at Hobby Lobby. I'll mod podge the Christmas paper on. Add some beads or something...maybe glitter. The letters come two to a package for 99¢, They are 4" letters.
