I just finished checking my students' quizzes and the majority did okay but about a third did miserably. Does anyone have any ideas that might be used to reteach this skill? TIA

I found some fantastic task cards created by Smoke20 on the third grade board. But I need to reteach as well as give more practice. Still looking for ideas.

oooooohhhh - I like the task cards! Another idea would be a mixed set of task cards with both possessives and contractions. The task could be to name what the noun possesses or write the words that make up the contraction.

I teach my kids that the apostrophe in a contraction is the skid mark left behind when two words got squished together so hard a letter or two got squeezed out.

My students have individual wipe boards and I will have them write a word and then put their finger over the 's and ask themselves is this one or more than one? They seem to have more trouble with plural than singular because they want to add an s to everything. I love the pp of the skid mark. Really, just practice, practice, practice You know what that makes?
You could call them to the board or whatever if you don't have individual boards. It's a difficult concept. Let's face it, many adults get it wrong.

You could also take out the possessive noun and the option of singular or plural. Then write the word and the students have to fill it in. For example,

The class talked about each ___________________ favorite vegetable.

person's or persons'

are great!!! I like them a lot! Thanks!

I give my students a sentence and they have to change it to posessive form.
The hats belonging to the woman are pretty.... (the students write) :
The woman's hats are pretty.
Once they get this concept, when they see a sentence with possesion, they will be able to identify if it is singular, plural.. etc.
