What do you think? I was out last week, my first sub day and had requested a particular sub. I saw her the day before the job and she said that she had recv'd the request and was looking forward to it. I took off my day and came back to find out that my P had switched subs on me! The sub was working at our school but in a different room. Maybe I am being picky, but does this seem right? WHy do we get to choose if that happens?
but it could be any number of things. Were other teachers out that are specials? Was the sub sped trained? I agree that I don't like it when that happens but it happens. I subbed for many years and I HATED it when that happened to me but subbing is precarious in that you pretty much do what the adminstration requires of you.. Let it go and don't give it a second thought.
This happened to me once. The requested sub was a retired teacher from my school. My grade level partner was away unexpectedly, and as she had a more challenging class, behavior-wise, the principal felt that my sub would be a better sub for that class. I wouldn't worry too much about. As the pp said, there could be any number of reasons it happened.
Its happened to me too. The (former) principal actually took the sub I had hired for a professional day and put her in a different class and told me to find another one!
My P does this ALL the time! It is so annoying, because let's face it, when you think you're getting a sub you've had many times before your lesson plans are not quite as detailed...But, I guess she does it because some classes are more challenging than others and some subs have more experience.
I don't think subs should be switched if you've requested them. There's no sense in requesting, if they're going to throw you a curve ball like that. Plus, you adjusted all of your plans accordingly, knowing that that particular sub would be there that day.
In one of the old districts that I subbed in, I was switched constantly... even throughout the day a few times (but it was a hard school, and it was getting the right fit for different HS classes mainly).
In the districts I sub in now, one will absolutely not change... it's computer-run, and Ps cannot change the system. In the other, you can get changed, and it happens, but they realize the frustration, so most of the time they'll leave you there.
I understand your frustration from both ends - as a sub and a (past) contracted teacher... basically, everytime you leave, leave plans as if you don't know the person. You never know when the person you requested has to back out of the dispatch and you're left with a new person anyways!
I have strep, pnemonia and flu, (since Thanksgiving) and this will be my second day out. For my first day, I had secured a former teacher from my grade level and building. In other words, someone who I KNEW could handle my class and follow a real lesson plan and do what I needed her to do. I could rest and know my kids were in good hands.
While I was at the Dr.'s today, he said stay out at least one more day. I called the school, and my sub had already been requested by another teacher for tomorrow, and I would have to call subfinder. (Hard to do simplified lesson plans with all my stuff at school!)
So, I called another teacher on my level and asked her to dig out some worksheets for me. She (apparently) talked to the principal, who decided that I would get my sub back, and the other teacher gets whoever she gets.
I'm sure the other teacher was not happy, but I really needed her more!
