Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments

Has anyone made these with their class? I have seen them but have not made them, but I am going to do it this year. I found some recipes online, but none of them said how many ornaments the dough made. I am not sure how much to mix up. I have 25 kids, so I need enough for all of them. Also, some of them said to add all-spice, but will they be alright without that? If I put glitter in them, will it mess up the proportions? Thanks!

Cinnamon dough ornaments are SO MUCH FUN to make with kids and they'll make your classroom smell awesome!

Here's the recipe I use:
- 1 1/2 cups ground cinnamon
- 1 cup applesauce
- 1/4 cup white school glue

I'm sure if you add glitter, the dough will be fine. I would bring enough ingredients for 2 or 3 batches and see how it goes. Maybe you could make a batch at home to see how many ornaments exactly you'll get. (It depends on how big your cookie cutters are.) Remember, the ornaments will shrink as they dry. I have the kids use straws to poke a hole at the top so they can thread a ribbon through them after they're dry. I usually have the kids work in partners or in groups of 3 to mix up the dough.

We made them last year and I did not have such great luck with them. The dough was too doughy and it took forever for them to dry. I am not sure what happened, but I am going to do something different this year! I hope they turn out for you!

Maybe you could have used a little more cinnamon...I did this a few years ago and they turned out well and the room smelled WONDERFUL!!!!! Get your cinnamon at the Dollar Tree or Dollar General and the applesauce too, for that matter. You get a cute decoration with little expense! Hope it works out for you!

During our Gingerbread Unit we made those wonderful ornaments. They last a long time. I only had 15 students that year. I noticed that if the ornaments are too thin the edges will curl when they dry. You will need a lot of cinnamon so buying it at a discount store is ideal. I had my students decorate the ornaments with craft paints and then we added a red ribbon to hang on the tree.
