I simply ask the child if they used an "I message" to deal with the issue. If the answer is no, I ask them to turn around and I pretend to pull off a tail. then I "give' them their tail and tell them to throw it out on their way over to speak to their classmate. It works like a charm.

Our guidance counselor shared a book "A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue"-not sure of the author. It was great. I also remind the children that tattling is done to get someone in trouble and telling is to get someone (or yourself) out of trouble. They seem to be getting the hang of it. (First Graders)

The EAR

I returned to school after having a sub and there was a stick figure drawn on a piece of computer paper with a gigantic ear on it's head. The ear took up most of the space on the page. Under the picture, it said Mr. Ear. I asked the kids what this was all about and they told me that the sub drew it and that if they had a tattle, they had to tell the Mr. Ear instead of the sub. Brilliant idea, huh?

I also love the Tattle Tongue book--they get so into it! (1st grade)

I also ask the kids 3 things after they tattle and then they eventually won't come and tattle because they end up asking themselves--kind of cool when you see them actually asking themselves before they come to you...
1. Was it dangerous?
2. Is anyone hurt?
3. Did it stop you from learning?

If they say no to all 3 things, then it is a tattle and I don't want to hear about it.
