UGG! I am testing a few students for tutoring in their homes, and they live in cockroach infested apartments. Hopefully, they can get to a different location for tutoring. Although, the students are newly arrived refugees with little items - clothing on their backs, so it is higly unlikely. So, I don't carry cockroaches home with me, does any one have any helpful hints?

as little as possible. No bags, briefcases, etc...

I feel your pain. I have been through that during a few IEPs in my time.

are VERY common here. DS has them at his school and the ones at my school I swear have escaped from some failed science experiment....(Think HUGE, flying, and did I mention HUGE?)

Somehow we have managed not to have any at our house. We do not bring backpacks/bags in the house that have been at the school..but that is the only big thing we do..

Leave everything you can at home.

Cockroaches are as smart as they are ugly... they get into everything and will hitch a ride quietly happily on anything!

Can they meet you at the library or at school? It isn't just a matter of you being skeeved out by 'roaches, but if they're living in stressful situations, maybe they'll study better elsewhere.

Do not bring any bags in with you if you can avoid it. If you have books, etc., carry them in your arms and give them a good shake (discreetly) before you put them in your car when you leave. You can buy multi-gallon size ziplock bags now, and if you're concerned that your items may've come in contact with baby 'roaches or eggs, you can stick them in the large baggies and freeze them overnight. It will kill anything alive that stuck to your books.

How do I know all this? I did what you did and learned the hard way. It wasn't a huge deal, but I keep a very clean home and didn't want roaches anywhere near me or my baby. I unknowingly brought a purse with me that had all kinds of edibles in it... granola bars, gum, mints, etc. Even though it was zipped and in my view the entire time, a fat 'roach crawled inside and jumped out onto my kitchen counter when I set it down at home.

Whatever you do, do not step on them to kill them! If you happen to step on one that is carrying eggs, those eggs will end up on your shoes and you'll be taking home new pets. That was the first lesson that my coworkers taught me at my first school.
