I usually do a search for free translating and go to the website that pops up. It is really only good for translating phrases though. You can at some sights type in whole sentences, but they often don't translate correctly. I work in a school w/ high population of hispanics so I look forward to seeing if anyone knows of a good web site.

i don't know what you are looking for translations for...

but our school (ELL population) was discouraged by our ELL teacher from using a site to translate because some words don't translate well and it would be easy to offend. (just thought i'd mention.)

caution with such websites

I am a foreign language teacher, and I've taken a look at some of these websites. Babelfish (Altavista Translation Services) is one of them. It's okay maybe to translate a word here or there, but sentences are often translated literally, and that is not understood by native speakers. If you try this, you will see what I mean: Type a sentence that you wish to have translated from English into Spanish. Once the Spanish translation pops up, try translating it back into English again. You will get something nonsensical.
