Rule of Thumb

I use the "Rule of Thumb" with my students. If students are deciding whether or not a book is at their appropriate reading level, they should:
1) Flip open to any part of the book randomly.
2) Read the page they flipped to.
3) Count the number of unknown words or mistakes they made on their hand.
If the student made:
0-1 mistakes- independent (easy) level
2-3 mistakes- instructional (just right) level
4 or more mistakes- frustration (hard) level
Students are encouraged to get books at their independent or instructional levels. I teach 3rd grade, and if a student is unsure about a book, I have him/her read the book to me, and we use the "Rule of Thumb" together! Works great, and later on in the year, the students have got it!
