how to choose just right book

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I have seen a page with guidelines to help student pick a "just right" book for reading workshop and DEAR time. Does anyone have a copy or similiar page or know a website where I can find one?

Just right books

I use page 146 of Guiding Readers and Writers to make a chart with my class. Our chart this year looks like this

Just Right Books
-I understand and enjoy them
-I can read them smoothly
-Just a few places where I have to think about a word or the meaning
-Reading just right books helps me become a better reader

We also use the 5 finger thing where if you can't read five of the words on a page then its probably too challenging for you right now.

Rule of Thumb

I use the "Rule of Thumb" with my students. If students are deciding whether or not a book is at their appropriate reading level, they should:

1) Flip open to any part of the book randomly.
2) Read the page they flipped to.
3) Count the number of unknown words or mistakes they made on their hand.
If the student made:
0-1 mistakes- independent (easy) level
2-3 mistakes- instructional (just right) level
4 or more mistakes- frustration (hard) level

Students are encouraged to get books at their independent or instructional levels. I teach 3rd grade, and if a student is unsure about a book, I have him/her read the book to me, and we use the "Rule of Thumb" together! Works great, and later on in the year, the students have got it!

I did several minilessons than posted these cards in the reading center. I also made bookmarks. These might not be final draft (think the numbers are wrong) but the words are what they say. I laminated them and gave them to the studnet.

Thanks to you and to the anonymous originator--love this. "Work your reading muscles"-- I teach middle school and this is just right.

Thank you for sharing the attachment. I think this is a great way to connect book selection to something that the students can connect with.

I just stumbled upon this as I was searching for advice or templates for choosing "just the right" book. Thanks so much for uploading your templates- they are wonderful!
