Place different colored unifix cubes in a lunch bag and ask the probability of pulling each color. Make predictions. Then pull somwhere around 40 times and see if the results increase porportionally. Graph it. Teach them to write it as a ratio. Give them each a dice and have them figure out the probability of rolling each number, even numbers, odd numbers, prime and composite numbers. Seperate the class into two groups, those that can whistle and those that can't. See if the probability is the same for a another class of the same size. Those are some things I did last week.

Mrs. Renz has a wonderful page of math sites.

The site below is from her section on "Probability and Statistics." Maybe they will inspire some hands-on activities for your students:

(If you scroll up or down, you can look through the other math sections for more ideas!)

making spinners

I have had the kids make spinners every year. They love it. we have clear plastic spinners, the studetns can wriet with a vis a vis marker right on the spinner. They spell out the first 4, 6, or 8 letters in their name and then they create questions. They switch spinners and test out their predictions.
