I teach 3rd grade, and I am trying to teach my students the subtle differences between a folktale and fable (without confusing them too much).

From all the research I have done, a fable is a special type of folktale. It seems that both can include animals or inanimate objects that can talk as well as a moral or lesson.

Are there any other attributes I should use to help explain the differences between these two? I teach in California, and students are expected to comprehend basic plots of these types of literature as well as be able to identify them.

I'd appreciate any help you can offer!

I appreciate your posts. This cleared it up for me...I was making the third grade material a bit more difficult than I should have!

Sooo...the main difference is that fables teach a moral and all fairytales do not?? Are fables the same as a tall tale? I have always found this confusing.

A fable is a made-up
story which is told for the purpose of imparting a moral or teaching people something about life

A tall tale is a story which is usually presented as truth - ie, the teller claims that this really happened to him/ her - but it is so exaggerated that nobody really believes it.

A fable will begin with, "once upon a time."

A tall tale with begin with, "you're not going to believe this sh*t."

Folktales = a fictional story that attempts to explain "why the way something is" ex: why the leopard has it's spots.

Fables = a fictional story that attempts to teach a lesson. Ex the the lion and the mouse.
