last year i was in first grade and had tables; this year im in second grade and i have tables and i absolutely hate them... i have to use alot of my counters and shelfs for their books and folders (i dont have alot of shelves in my room to store; ive had to buy my own) and then on their tables they have their cadies with their supplies plus a box for them to put their folders in while they are using them. Well i dont think i am going to get desks any time soon so was wondering what are some ideas that some of you have; those of you that have tables; what are some things that have worked for you. Please i am in need of ideas i just cant stand all the mess... I was thinking maybe crates?

I use cubbies for there stuff or there are chair pockets. During the day I have certain times where they get up to get there stuff. For notebooks and things I have these magazien bins. Each table has a labled bin for there notebooks. I use baskets for pencils and when needed bring out crayons and scissors things like that. My coworker uses the chair pockets that keeps all of the students belongings. The downfall of the chair pocket is they tend to take up walking space becuase they can stick out there and it can cause the chair to be top heavy. Those are some things I do.

If you know someone who can build them/get them donated (talk with Target/Wal-Mart about a donation to your school) do two shelf bookcases. They take up room also, but then the students have have their stuff handy.

We have cubbies for daily storage. I also requested the PTA to make chair sacks for my kids. Those are a lifesafer.

I thought I had the pattern stored, but I can't find it. If you google chair sacks, I'm sure you'll come up with a few. If you can go this route be sure you use a heavy weight denim. We tried it with a thinner (cuter) fabric but it just did not hold up as well as denim.

I'm not a seamstress, but it seems that you could make the chair pockets with bath towels. Just turn over and sew about 8 inches on the top to slide over the back of the chair, and do the same on the other end for the pocket that the student puts their supplies in.

Crates are a great idea. Also, I've seen shelves at Target that have (I think) 9 sections for about $39.99. Perhaps you could get a couple of these to use for 'cubbies'.

I have been thinking about using a cover for the back of the chair also but didn't think of using towels! Great idea! Thanks!
