Please clarify some questions about RTI

While progress monitoring, how often do you give a probe? Weekly? Every two weeks?

Please explain the difference between progress monitoring and strategic monitoring.

How long do you work on an intervention before moving on to a new intervention?

Once a student reaches the 'target', do you drop from small group and monitor in classroom or what?

Anything else you can tell me to help clear my mind would be MOST beneficial and appreciated!

Thanks!

"While progress monitoring, how often do you give a probe? Weekly? Every two weeks?"

This will depend on how far below the student is. A weekly probe, I believe, is appropriate for a kid on tier 3. A probe every 2 weeks would be fine for a student on tier 2. You are just waiting 2 weeks to see if the skill is improving, instead of checking every week.

"Please explain the difference between progress monitoring (PM) and strategic monitoring."

AIMSweb uses strategic monitoring to mean a less frequent form of progress monitoring. Progress monitoring is more tightly watched. I can see how individual schools can assign their own meaning to these terms.

"How long do you work on an intervention before moving on to a new intervention?"

The purpose of an intervention is to close the skill gap a student has. Best practice is 9 weeks for one intervention. Since interventions vary you have to be flexible but at the same time educators need to actually provide the intervention consistently. This is where weekly PM will show you if the intervention is working with this student. If you see the students making little or no progress after 9 weeks defiantly change interventions. Keep in mind that every intervention isn't going to work well for certain students. That's why RTI involves multiple interventions.

"Once a student reaches the 'target', do you drop from small group and monitor in classroom or what?"

Once a student reaches their target, they should demonstrate the skill independently multiple times. A gradual release of the student back into the classroom is fine. They still need to be watched so they don't fall behind again.

My school operates very similarly to the PP, except for the question about moving to a new intervention. If a child isn't showing growth after three progress monitorings, then we change the intervention. So, for the really at-risk students, they have three weeks to show growth. The Tier 2 students have six weeks.

We monitor an intervention for 3 to 4 weeks and if the student isn't making adequate progress we consider an intervention change.
