1,000 cards banned

So this week we celebrated the 5th graders' 1000th day of school. I took the idea from some of my fellow PTers to do 1000 Valentine's cards for those in need. We were going to send them a children's hospital, nursey homes, a shelter for battered women, ect. Well, we worked on them, but they were not done during the time that I gave them. So, while I was working on RTI with a group, the rest of my class was working on the cards. I guess others in the district found out, a parent complained, and now we can no longer create these cards. If the kids want to finish, then they have to come in for recess or do them at home.

This project supports so many curricular activities next time send a note highlighting which areas it supports so it is curriculm based. Scrooges are everywhere.

Have the local newspaper take a picture of this project and mention that the kids had to give up recess to complete it. You'd get a bit of support, but the powers that be might get put out.

I simply do not understand some people's opposition to things? Did they give you an actual reason or just that a parent complained? It is a downright dirty shame that literally 1000 people will "lose out" because of one parent complaint...

I hope your students complete the project and prove themselves successful. (Perhaps you could through a geometry lesson in and discuss the symmetry of hearts...then accidental glue them on pieces of construction paper that are folded in half, then in Writer's workshop you could do a poetry lesson which they write inside their folded math papers)....

If you have 25 kids...Thats 40 cards per kid..Say they take 10 minutes per card- That is a whole lot of class time....I would never think it would be ok to use that much class time either. Sounds like a nice idea, but that would never be approved when I submit my lesson plans..

..If you have multiple classes that may be a different story though.
