Six Traits Menu Board
Old 05-08-2010, 10:12 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

r9miles and 3teacupteache asked me to post a menu board for 6-Traits Writing modeled after the CAFE board. I'd love to say I created these nice documents, but I am not! I found them here on ProTeacher. If you've used a 6-Traits board like this or have pics of a 6-Traits board, please post to let us know how it all worked for you. Lots of us are interested.

I'll have to post twice to include all 6 traits.

What exactly is the 6 traits board? Is it basically like the CAFE? You would teach a mini lesson each day from the 6 traits? Would this work for all grade levels or is it grade level specific? Thanks

I don't think the idea and the board itself would be necessarily grade level specific, but I think how you teach each individual mini-lesson would be targeted by grade level. I really like the idea and I'm going to try to implement both this idea and regular D5 & CAFE this year. Hopefully I'm not filling my plate too full.

(and yes, I believe they do exist)

Is 6th grade too late to begin teaching 6 traits? None of the teachers in my school use it...do you think it would confuse them? Would it be worth it?

6th Grade Traits

Hi trishg1! It's never too late to begin. In fact, last year when I was studying the writing section of my National Boards, I read the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing (Grades 3 and Up) by Ruth Culham. I liked it so much that I purchased the primary grade version for my second graders. It's full of lessons and student sample papers. The rubrics were also very helpful. I would also google the Writing Fix. This site has samples and ideas for writing too. I hope this helps.

I totally agree with pensieve. It's never too late to start teaching the 6 Traits of writing.

The menu J. Elaine posted is the one I created. Here is a picture of what it looks like in my classroom.
http://www.teacherweb.com/OH/JCES/Mr...guez/apt1.aspx

This is the first year that I have used the menu and it worked out very well. The kids are continually referring back to it during writing, I created all of my rubrics to line up with it, and it makes it easy for me to see the areas we need to touch back on during mini-lessons.

Trishg1....while I currently teach 2nd, I used to teach 6th and 7th. I always used 6-traits in middle school with great success.

tammyr,
Thanks so much for creating and sharing your 6-Traits menu board and for posting your pics and for reporting how it worked for you. I can definitely see that students would refer back to the strategies you've taught and when they're posted under each heading on the board.

I loved seeing your photos. I bookmarked your site and plan to explore some of the other features very soon. Thanks again!

The traits are helpful as long as you are a writer----they are simply tools that help to make writing more clear. It's never too late to learn how to get your message across in a way that will be received by the audience in the way that you intended. (Is that clear?? )

This was developed by another wonderful PT.....sorry I can't find the thread to give credit! If you are out there, please let us know who you are so we can ask questions directly of you! Anyway, I use the board just like my Daily 5 board...kids write down strategies and post as we learn them. I use this in conjunction with Everyday math curriculum.

Math PACE board...

Hello TammyR. Last summer I created a PACE board and posted it on PT. I guess I should have put my name on it, as many people have taken it and turned it into their own (as I hoped they would). Thanks for giving the credit though. busybee3 (AKA Michelle Whitehead). I can always attach another copy of mine if anyone wants it.

Thanks for sharing your 6 traits menu. I really like it, but I'm wondering what grade it is geared for. I teach 4th grade and I'm trying to match up my state standards. Any info would be appreciated.

You really helped me a lot. It has been a rough process getting going this year for me. My mother in law passed away two days ago and I have been less patient and focused.
