Word Cemetery

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Every year we "kill" words that can no longer appear in our writing...I have 28 students this year...here are what I've come up with so far...any more thoughts?

1.said
2.pretty
3.nice
4.good
5.great
6.big
7.small
8.fat
9.mad
10.sad
11.bad
12. like
13. got
14. a lot
15. happy
16. go
17. very
18. funny
19. yeah
20. gonna
21. wanna
22. lots of
23. so
24. well
25. beautiful
26.
27.
28.

We create tombstones with epitaphs and a list of "survivors" (synonyms) it's an exciting writing assignment...they greatly enjoy pointing out misused words and really try to improve on this. Please help me think of 3 more, I'm not sure about 20 and 21 either.

dead words

The first ones to die in my room are thing and stuff.

My other favorite to die is "tell" as in "I'm going to tell you....
I hate when they write that!

A pp beat me to "and stuff", but I'd add "interesting", and "really". And I'd watch for "could of" and "would of" instead of could've and would've.

Hopefully, they're NOT writing cause (or worse cuz) instead of because.

I know you're asking for more ideas, but I'm actually thinking of stealing (I guess borrowing sounds nicer) yours! Can you give me some examples of the synonyms you used for some of these? This is something I want to try with my class next year- I love this idea!

I like this idea, and every year or so, I think about doing it. Maybe next fall . . .

I found this when I googled "dead words."

1. http://www.onekama.k12.mi.us/h2007/E...Dead.Words.htm

2. http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/3318

3. http://www.iss.k12.nc.us/writing/deadwords.htm

Here's a url I found for a ProTeacher discussion of Dead Words and Synonyms:

Here's a picture of the bulletin board, I have a table right under it so students can come up to use the "survivors"

I also used tall and loud. For loud, their list was more onomatopoeia words, but it worked.

WE did this too! It is so much fun. I asked the principal if there was somewhere on the school grounds where we could really bury them! She found a spot and it was so much fun. We had the kids write Eulogies and say them right before they put them in the hole. They really got dramatic. It was great!
