Not that I would eat one raw (they are dicey enough cooked!) but I just told my son that it's okay to eat one raw and wanted to make sure I was right. (He won't eat one raw)
It came up b/c we just got a grill, and he's been grilling dinner for us. I was explaining last night, when he was grilling steak, how important it is to wash off the plate that had the uncooked meat on it, or to get a new plate.
He must have actually listened; as he went out with the hot dogs, he said that he would come back in to wash off the plate. I said he didn't really have to, as hot dogs were technically okay the way they are (if gross).
I'd still wash the plate, just cause I think hot dog juice is gross....but yes, they are already cooked when you buy them. You are just re-heating when you grill them.
I don't eat hot dogs anymore (ick ick ick ), but ate them all the time when I was a kid. And yep, used to eat them straight out of the fridge without cooking them. I'm sure somebody will say that's unhealthy, but I don't remember ever getting sick. I'm pretty sure they're already cooked when you buy them.
I think if you buy the big brand packaged kind at the grocery store you should fine-----My family has eaten many this way without complication on camping trips. If you buy the fancy kind in natural casings you should probably cook those first.
I used to eat them straight out of the package. Then when I became pregnant with ds #1 my mom told me some gross story (that she probably made up) to get me to quit. It worked!
I grew up eating a Mock ham salad that my mother made. It was yummy! She has long since passed on, but I still make the salad. The only change I made was that I use Turkey dogs, because I don't care for the beef dogs.
Here is the recipe for those of you that may want to try it. You will need to have a food processor or meet grinder.
1 pk of rinsed turkey dogs
1/4 peeled yellow onion
1medium sized dill pickle
1 slice of bread (the heal is great for this, because you grind it.)
