All the books I have seem to have bits and pieces of figurative language. Put your books in tubs and have students look for them. Good luck!

I think I will have my kids go on a "figurative language hunt." Great idea! Thanks!

I just started doing this regularly in my classroom. I made posters for Metaphor, Simile, Hyperbole and Personification. They get a ticket that puts them in a classroom drawing that we do every 2 or 3 weeks. They have to write it on a sticky note and tell me which place it falls into and then they post it. Very fun. They find them during silent reading. I've noticed only my top students have the skill to find them in their reading, but I hope more will begin to notice.

Personification:
Water Dance
Twilight Comes Twice
Goodbye Geese (out of print but worth getting "used" at amazon.com)

Alliteration:
Clara the Caterpillar
Some Smug Slug
Princess Prunella and the Purple Peanut
Four Famished Foxes and Fosdyke

Idioms:
More Parts

Similes & Metaphors"
Two Bad Ants
Brave Irene

Marvin Terban's book "IT FIGURES" is a MUST!
His other books are great!

NOVELS:
We just read my favorite novel, Wringer, by Jerry Spinelli. Its' full of similes and metaphors.
Sees Behind Trees has lots of figurative language.

Use POETRY to find all examples of Figs. of Speech. I copied a bunch of poems that had examples and the kids had to underline figs. of speech they found in different colors (ie. blue-simile, yellow-hyperbole, red-onomatopeia, green-personification, . . . )
