Book Excerpt Suggestions for Mini-Lessons

Hi All,

Does anyone have a list or can share book excerpts to teach mini-lessons on visualizing, determining importance, questioning, drawing inferences and schema? I have some picture books to introduce the concepts but would like suggestions for book excerpts and titles for teaching the comprehension strategies.

I have used Charlotte's Web for visualizing before. There is a vivd description of the barn in the first or second chapter (pp 16-17 according to my lesson plan). Students use that description to make a 3D illustration. I take an 8" square of paper. Cut one corner from the point to the center. You can fold the cut sections one under the other and create a "corner" of the barn.

Books for lessons

I teach using a lot of picture books. I do use some novels, but only excerpts. If you don't already have it, Strategies that Work is a great book that gives lots of good lessons. For fifth grade, here are some that I use:

Visualizing: Owl Moon by Jane Yolen (I do not show pictures, I have students sketch using 2 crayons or colr pencils) Fall is Here! I Love it! We highlight words that help us visualize- this is first week of school. We also have a weekly poem in which we highlight visualizing words and then students get a copy of the poem to draw what they visualize.

Questioning: Star of Fear, Star of Hope (SS integration, kids love this book) we also use some Among the Hidden chapter 1, lots of wondering about what is going on in this book, lost of nonfiction picture books pertaining to the unit we are studying in science

Drawing Inferences: The Van Gogh Cafe, Cheyenne Again

have lessons to use or is it a theory book? I've been looking for anything that has reading lessons in it because our basal is very weak.

This site gives you a list of reading skills and strategies, when you click on the strategy or skill it gives a list of recommended picture books for teaching it.

As for the reading strategies like making connections, questioning, visualizing etc.... I love to use this site for Into the book. The kids really like it.
(I usually skip Watch the video-it seems too young for 5th graders but they love the "try it yourself")

I use a lot of novel units, but I do use the basal for some skills... those that I can't find anything else to teach it with.

Thank you all for the web sites!!

Thank you soooo much for the INTO the Book site. I'm trying to figure out some creative ways to teach summarizing and inferences and I LOVE the ideas to engage learners. Absolutely wonderful and it gets us away from the paper and pencil technique for assessing learners' abilities to use these skills.
