I teach self-contained 6th grade, and I would like to change the way that I teach reading/writing. Would any of you recommend the daily 5 for this age level?

Our district is doing it through 6th grade. It is very doable. There is a board for upper level D5 teachers that might be helpful. I'll go find where it is.

It is on the recently posted. It actuall y is on the first page today with 340 + posts. You should find some 6th grade information. I teach 5th grade and believe it is very doable. Good luck!

I did it last year for self contained 6th grade, and will use it again with my 5th -6th combo. My students' reading scores went up, and they (as a class) doubled the amount of AR points scored. My students loved it, and I believe it enabled and empowered them to achieve. There is a CAFE menu floating around for upper elem- if you go through a couple of pages on this board you will find it. And yes, you should go to the upper elem group.

Several of us made some changes for older kids- there are several posts on that subject too, esp on the upper elem group.

I started D5 by reading every single post on the peony board. I suggest you dot the same- many many questions have been asked and answered here.
