I had found a poem called "A Box of Crayons." I can't find it now! Does anyone have this poem and activities to go with it? Thanks!

Poem/Book Activity

I read this book to my class last year and we did an activity with it.

I set my class up in tables of 4. Each table got a box of 8 crayons. They got to each pick two crayons from the box and had to color a picture with only the two crayons. Then after they finish, I have them flip the picture over and I give them each their own box of 8 crayons. They are given time to draw a new picture.

Once they are done, we talk about which picture they like better and why.

Then we read the story about the crayons and we talk about how our class is like the box of crayons. You'd be surprised at how quickly they pick up on the "meaning" of the story and how it relates to getting along in our classroom.

crayon poem

Hi, I use to do activities with this same poem. I thought it spoken well about the diversity that we have in the classroom. After I had a child ask if "he was the dull one", I have had second thoughts about using the poem. Of course I tried to say all the right things, but I think in his heart he felt he was the dull one and I just can't bring myseld to use this poem anymore. Kids can be so brutal to their peers and I don't want to be the cause of a child being called 'dull'.

Crayon Poem

I have this one ...

Wouldn’t it be terrible?
Wouldn’t it be sad?
If one single color was all that we had?
If everything was purple?
Or red?
Or blue? Or Green?
If yellow, pink, or orange was all that could be seen?
Can you imagine how dull the world would be …
if just one single color was all that we got to see?

Also there is a book "The Crayon Box that Talked" that is geared for smaller kids but talks about how the colors didn't like each other but worked together to make things. SUPER CUTE!

Also, reallygoodstuff.com has a poster with crayons on it and a poem to go with different from the one above!

BB Idea

Here is the crayon pattern for an activity. I am glad I saw this post because I needed a BB for Meet the Teacher night. After the story or poem, kids draw and color their picture on the crayon wrapper. Then they make the crayon whatever color(s) fit their personality. Line the crayons up in two rows like a box of crayons on the BB. I am going to make one for myself and a rainbow crayon for the whole class to have 24 crayons. I made the "Would't it be terrible" poem on a Word doc with rainbow word art to enlarge and use as a poster on the left side of the BB and the crayons will be on the right.

Once again PT has saved the day for me!

What a cute idea! This crayon box font might be cute to incorporate somewhere.
