Launching Daily 5, then CAFE

So all of the third grade teachers got together the other night to talk about the launch between us. I still feel a little lost with the launch. We decided to start the Daily 5 first, and just follow the book as is. Later we will impliment the CAFE into it. We have never done the Daily 5 before so we don't want to rush into it. What do you think? Is it best to launch them apart or together?

I'm going to launch separately as well. At least that's what I think now. I may change my mind after I see the sisters in 2 weeks...but for now I'm planning to launch separately and use some CAFE language during other lessons and officially launch CAFE when it feels right.

Im the same way... I'm new to D5 and am going to launch that right away. I'm a little unsure as to how CAFE comes in yet, so I will dabble with that later on when I feel comfortable..

Good luck!

It is pretty easy to include some CAFE strategies as you are launching D5. When you do a read aloud you can model Check For Understanding. Then as you send them off to practice building stamina for Read to Self, you can ask them to do a check for understanding as they read the book. Have you had a chance to read the CAFE book and check out the launching pages in the Appendix? They help a lot! Good Luck!

I agree with the previous post. I think it would be pretty easy and comfortable to introduce both at the same time.
