That's a good question. I never wear sleeveless shirts to school, but with the crazy heat of late that may change. I bought a couple of nice dressy sleeveless shirts last week (just in case). I'll also wear capris.
Something really comfortable because it's really hot and we have no AC.. and unlike the end of the year when it's really hot and we can slack off a little, we have to be totally ON the first day!
By the time I get home, it looks like I've been to the beach.
The first day I usually dress up a little more. Nice slacks and blouse and sometimes a small heel. (that's the only time they'll see me in any heels!) It is well over 100 degrees when school starts here, so I usually am sweating like crazy by the afternoon. But everyone in my school dresses a little nicer the first day and also for Meet the Teacher night.
After that, I go way more casual, khakis or capris, polo shirts, flats, etc.. We can't wear sleeveless shirts, so if I do I have to wear something over it. In our climate that should be outlawed!
The first day I always look nice! I want to dress up a little more then usual. And, as pp said, it's the only time they will ever see me in a heel taller than 1 inch!!
I usually wear a skirt or a dress, something cute and casual. We don't have AC in this IL school, and in August it is HOT. So at the end of the day I go home looking like crap! But that's okay! Totally worth it!
For BTS Night, I wear a dress or skirt again. I'm pretty young so I need to dress professionally to gain some credibility!!!
I will wait to see what the weather is, before I decide. It has been cooler than normal right now, but August and September are usually warm. I usually go with a skirt or dress and sandals for both the first day and Back To School Night. No heels for me!
I will wear capris or cropped pants the first day, with a knit top or cami with short sleeved cardigan- same for Open House. It may very well still be 100+ into September around here, so I will definitely dress for the temp! As for shoes, I need to find some new ones, becasue a lot of mine are starting to die.
I'm taking a little inventory this week to see what I need. Here in VA, next weekend is our our BTS state tax holiday. I'll probably wait on buying shoes until then- every little bit helps, and our tax rate is 4.5%.
I ALWAYS wear comfortable shoes! If I wear heels, I make sure to bring a back up pair I can put on once we settle into our classroom! I learned that after a couple of years with blisters from new shoes and sore feet from walking in heels all day!
Every year our principal buys us a new t-shirt that goes with our theme for the year. We usually wear the t-shirt with slacks. The parents are used to seeing us now all wearing the same shirt on the first day. It helps too because you feel very comfortable and you don't have to decide what to wear on the first day One less thing to worry about.
Our staff had matching polos last year so that everyone would stand out to the students. I don't know if we're doing that again this year or not. If yes, I'll probably wear capris and some nice slides. If we're wearing whatever, I don't know what I'll wear. I might wear my polo anyway. Like others said, no heels for me. I love the look of them and wish I could, but I'm already tall (5'9) so I would be a giant to my students. I also can't ever find any cute ones with only 1/2" heels in my area and I have to try them on so I'm nervous about ordering online. Any of you heel wearers have any suggestions?
The teachers at my school like to wear tee shirts that say second grade, 2nd,etc. on the first day of school. We have them made and all wear them on the same day with capris and sandals. It helps parents spot us quickly! It helps to be relaxed on the first day. We dress a bit more for Open House, but are casual at Meet and Greet.
I usually wear a dress or a skirt with short heels because we stand in the yard all week to pick up our kids and the parents just stand there wathing us. So that entire week, I pretty much try to dress really nice with skirts and dresses. First impressions does matter. However, this year, i think I will throw in a couple of capris in with flats.
next weekend is our our BTS state tax holiday. I'll probably wait on buying shoes until then- every little bit helps, and our tax rate is 4.5%
Ours is this weekend, so I'm sure the stores will be crowded today, but I'm heading out to find a cute blouse, casual dress, or SOMETHING.
BTW, our tax rate is 7%!
I'm glad to know others wear capris on the first day. I do have some black ones that are dressy - with a little cuff on the ends - so they aren't too casual. I talked to another teacher this morning in church and she's wearing capris. She's right next to me in school, so I may go that route with a new blouse.
I noticed a lot of you talk about the heat - do you not have A.C.? It's 100* today in south MS, but we have A.C. in our rooms.
It usually depends on my mood that day. But often I wear a skirt or a simple jersey knit dress for the first day and open house. If I'm not in a dress up mood I will wear Capri pants with a nice top. I save the more casual comfortable clothes and flip flops for the second week of school.
Our principal expects to dress pretty nice, but I'll step it up a little for open house and the first day. I'll probably have a ton of parents show up for those two days, so I like to look as professional as I can.
One year we all had matching school polo shirts that we wore with jeans or khakis. Another year everyone in the entire district got matching t-shirts from central office. We wore those with jeans or capris.
Last year I wore dress capris, heels, and a dressy blouse. Another year I wore a dress.
For open house we've always been told to "dress nice", but not to "overdress". It can be intimidating.
They had a tiger and cheetah type print, too. It has short sleeves and super comfy! Plus, it's on sale this week for $20.
That's cute! If I had a Target nearby, I'd run over there, but it's 30 minutes away.
I did go to Cato's earlier today and found a cute zebra tank with sparkles on the front (I have a black shrug I can wear over it), that will look cute with my black capri pants. That's for the 1st day. DD also found a cute chunky black bracelet and black and white earrings to go with it.
AND.... I found a cute, comfy black skirt that I'm going to wear with my cheetah print blouse (I wore last year on the first day of school). I have matching earrings and black sandals for it already. That will be for Open House next week.
