Daily 5 Math organization pictures

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am posting these pictures on here since you can't post them in the Daily 5 math group... hopefully some people on here might be interested in them as well!

First picture: Independent choice shelf... there are 5 compartments on this shelf and they each house a different Daily 5 math choice. Inside the containers hold the games that are reflected on the math daily 5 board.

The daily 5 math board.... it isn't completed yet in my room so I just took a picture of what it will look like. At the top are clip art representations for each d5 choice, and those same clip arts are on the individual bins on that shelf above.

Wow, looks great! I'm saving Math Daily 5 for the year after next since I'm just adopting D5/CAFE.

Can you tell me how you run your daily 5 math? I really want to do it but have no clue how to get started.

In a neat little package..

Here is how I do Daily 5 Math (until the Sisters publish their book) loosely based on what I had seen on the cafe website videos.

1) The math time block: 10 minute whole group lesson / 15 minute first round of D5 math while myself and my TA call small groups / 15 minute second round of D5 math while I call a 2nd group and my TA does one-on-one tutoring or minor assessments / 5 minute whole group wrap up or sharing time.

2) Daily 5 math choices: The same that the sisters have provided-
Paper Practice
Counting Games
Strategy Games
Fact Practice
Math Tools

These are put together on a board with all the games listed for each one under those headers. At the bottom of the board I have a sign up for each round.

3) CAFE math board: C- counting
A- accuracy (I can get to the right answers)
F- fluency (I can read my math fast)
E- explain math words

*I created a CAFE menu for what will work with my Kindergarten class and state standards.

4) Storage for Games: I have a 5 compartment block shelf in my math area. Each compartment has clear plastic bins that house the different kinds of games from the D5 Math board.

I hope this helps!

Are you using the games provided by envision? or are you making up different games? Is there a place on PT for me to find these games?

I tend to make up my own games and supplement using our math program called Investigations.

It is also helpful to note that I use what I teach whole group or during morning meeting as my independent games. For example, at morning meeting maybe up on my promethean board I have a dice, a picture of a tree, and some apple counters on the board. I show the students how to roll the dice, read the number, and then count that many apples and place them on the tree. A couple students come up as our activity to model how this game looks. I then show them the physical materials for this game and where they will be located in the math area for independent math time.

What could I do if I don't have a TA for Math?
