Do you have to cook the meat first for crockpot chili?

I want to make a crockpot chili tomorrow and I am limited on time and ingredients. I have the raw meat and tomato sauce and chili powder. I also will put an onion.

Can't I just put all that in there together, including the raw meat and let it cook all day or do I really need to brown the meat before it goes in??

TIA!

Absolutely, or you will have an oil slick on top.

Yes, brown the meat and drain it first. You don't have to drain off every last bit of grease as a little bit gives it flavor, but you want to get rid of the majority.

You could brown the ground beef and drain tonight. Throw it in a freezer bag or bowl tonight and put it in the fridge. Tomorrow morning, it will be ready to throw in the crock pot with everything else.

I don't brown the meat first, but I do skim the top before serving.
