Running Records -- what do you use?

We utilize running records in second grade, and many of the other grade levels here at our school, but they are very outdated, rather boring, and don't seem to be very logical leveling. What do you all use if you do any type of running records, or grade level reading assessments?

We use the DRA2 for our Beginning and End of the year reading assessment. We use leveled readers that have comprehension questions typed up at the end of 2nd and 3rd quarter and we just type up 100 word running records to use with our guided reading books.

Fountas and Pinnell Running Record System. Those are formal assessment and we have ongoing informal assessments in between that with just right books for the students.

readinga-z has a TON of running record forms with comprehension questions for all of their printable books. I use the benchmark books and running records/assessments between report cards to gauge children's levels.

Also, one thing my college professor stressed is the fact that all you need for a running record is a pencil, blank piece of paper, and a timer. Make a check mark for each word and code as you would any other running record.

Our district uses Fountas and Pinnell, but given a choice, I would use The Critical Reading Inventory published by Pearson. I was trained on it while working on my masters and find it far superior.

for running records which is OK until you hit the higher levels (L and up) then there is only one selection for that level
