If you use Study Island, can you tell me how kids earn blue ribbons? I have created a class assignment online for my kids, but I only see them earning one or two ribbons, when other classes have multiple ribbon averages.

What do my kids need to click on to earn these ribbons? I'm feeling the pressure from others to make sure my kids are blue ribbon kids.

When you're creating the assignment, you should have had the option to select a passing score from a drop down box. They should get ribbons if they attain that score.

Required score for blue ribbons is preset by Study Island. It is normally 68-70% correct. You can change the required percentage when you create the assignment. What normally happens is that students do poorly on their first set of questions and then each additional set is averaged in to what they have done previously. For instance, if they try 10 questions and only get 5 correct, their score is 50%. They can try another set of 10 (or any number of questions) and even if they get 8 out of 10 correct and their session score shows 80%, their total score will only be 65%. The more they get wrong in the beginning, the harder to pull up the grade it is. If students attempt 20 questions or so and their score is low, I have them tell me to clear their score. They then have to start again but normally can do a much better job at that point. Remind them they have to read the lesson also. Most jump right to the questions and the lessons do help! Every Study Island topic comes with a Passing Goal. This Passing Goal is usually around 10 items and 70%. It can be adjusted by the teacher, if allowed by the admin, through the Adjust Student Difficulty section(Option 1). The Passing Goal cannot be adjusted when creating an assignment.

When a student meets the passing goal, they are given a Blue Ribbon. The Blue Ribbon will automatically appear for the student. To see how many blue ribbons your students have earned, I suggest viewing the Blue Ribbon Report. You could also pull a Class Gradebook Report, by subject broken down by topic; At the center you will see student grade, and at the far right you can see the number of ribbons earned.

Study Island scores are cumulative. If a student is struggling to meet the passing goal because they scored poorly at first, you can remove sessions. To do this, pull the Class Gradebook Report, by subject broken down by topic, and click on the score for the trouble topic. A list of sessions will appear. To the left of each session is a white box. Check the box and click "Remove Checked Sessions."

Yes your kids are supposed to get blue ribbons that means they passed the topic. For example when you click on a topic like math 1 or com arts scrole down to the very bottem of the page and i'll say what each thing means. Hope this helps.
