Sharing Turkey in Disguise project

Clip to ScrapBook #1

These are not my original ideas...I just tweaked a bit for my class and I wanted to share. I wanted to incorporate a writing piece since my students are older. My students are newcomer ELL students in 4th/5th, so I'll see a range from basic sentences to writing with paragraphs. I made a list of questions to help jumpstart the writing piece...it's the first time I've ever done it this way, so we'll see how it goes. I put the docs on GoogleDocs so I didn't have to post a million attachments here. Here's what's in the docs:

* A basic cover letter (fillable PDF for your name)
* Project guidlines (fillable PDF for your due date)
* Two rubrics (one for the turkey, one for the writing piece)
* Parent signature sheet, to show they know about the project (a good teacher friend taught me to always do this)
* Writing questions to help jumpstart the writing piece
* Writing paper
* Turkey template (I DID NOT make this this! It was shared on here, thank you to those who shared it!)

I attached a pic of the docs and the files can be accessed below. It's pretty open-ended for the writing piece, since I need it to be really differentiated for my students--so hopefully it'll work for the different grade levels you have on here.

Files:
Cover Letter and Project Requirements
Rubric, Guiding Questions, Writing Paper
Turkey Template (I did not create this)

I am curious about how you introduce the idea of dressing up a character to an ELl student. Do you use a turkey picture or some other animal? I like to model what I expect from the students.

I had to build their background knowledge in Thanksgiving and the customs here first (though many were familiar with it!). I use web and our projector for a lot for this.

Then, I showed them some photo examples of the turkey project, like on this site: http://members.cox.net/otkaz/turkey.htm

This particular group is really high-level so I know they will do well with it. Funny thing is, they weren't too confused by the holiday, or the notion of the turkeys being in disguise--they understood the humor in that situation. What really threw them off was they would have to complete this kind of project at home! Most of them have never done a project at home before. That's why I really wanted to do this, so they get used to the idea of at home assignments that are given in America! I figured this would be a good place to start before getting into longer-term, more complex projects.

I forgot to mention initially that the graphics look nice if you print in grayscale too and photocopy...in case you don't want to waste ink!
